Post-Americanism

This is a great article about how the hysteria of America (doom and gloom) doesn't match up with the worldwide numbers and how really, times are pretty good. Also, as a pastor, this also means I might want to scale back my "America is like Rome is like Babylon" rhetoric.

  1. I liked the statement that you have a higher risk of drowning in the bathtub than being killed by a terrorist. I hope Americans have finally quit buying into the politics of fear. The current administration overplayed that tactic and it showed at midterm elections.

I also like the thought that rising nations simply want to get rich, not dominate the world. How great is that? They want to be like America in one way. Making money.

Staunch nationalism is a scary thing. History teaches us that. Some really, really nice people supported Hitler, Saddam, Milosevic and lots of other megalomaniacs too numerous to name, all in the name of patriotism.

I remember when Congress granted the "war powers act" to Bush. It scared the hell out of me. But most of the citizens of this country seemed to go on about their daily business. Just another headline. But it seems to me that giving one person that power could be a step that takes us somewhere we don't want to go. See examples above.

That we are an open, flexible society, and that this is one of our greatest strengths, was in danger of being compromised by the Religious Right. I hope Jim Wallis is right. I hope we are on the brink of a serious revival. The Great Awakening can't come soon enough!
